Embattled US senator, wrestling exec, face voters

US Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado faced the judgment of unhappy Democratic voters on Tuesday, not quite 90 days before November mid-term elections defined by a volatile anti-incumbent mood.

In Connecticut, meanwhile, Republicans seemed prepared to anoint millionaire professional wrestling executive and political novice Linda MacMahon their champion for the seat held by retiring veteran Democratic Senator Chris Dodd.

Voters in Georgia and Minnesota were also heading to the polls, poised to give observers and candidates nationwide more clues about how US public anger at the sour economy and Washington might affect the main contest, just months away.

Bennet, backed by President Barack Obama and the party's leaders in Washington, faced a tougher-than-expected challenge from former state legislator Andrew Romanoff, endorsed by former president Bill Clinton, and could be the latest Washington incumbent to fall.

Clinton, expected to criss-cross the country to stump for Democrats, has reportedly declared Romanoff, not Bennet, has "the best chance to hold this seat in November," when Republicans hope for big gains in the US Congress.

The competition on Celebrity Apprentice

The competition on Celebrity Apprentice brings a whole new meaning to “tea party,” as the final two, Holly Robinson Peete and Bret Michaels, face Donald Trump on Sunday’s episode to find out which of their Snapple flavors — her Compassionberry Tea or his Trop-A-Rocka Blend — will please the boss. But who deserves to win? And who deserves to hear, “You’re fired!”

Peete has smarts, passion and drive. Michaels has the sympathy vote — coming off of a near-death experience caused by a brain hemorrhage and a subsequent “warning stroke” that sent him back to the hospital on Thursday — but he’s also a team player and plans to be at the finale.

Although fellow Celebrity Apprentice competitor Cyndi Lauper labeled her “difficult,” Peete served as project manager more than anyone else (although she lost more tasks as well). Plus, the actress-author-activist-philanthropist is relentless in pursuit of Apprentice cash for her and husband Rodney Peete‘s HollyRod Foundation, which focuses on supporting autism patients — like their oldest son, RJ, 12.

Indy 500 qualifying

Last December, the IRL announced that Indy 500 qualifying will take place one week later than normally scheduled. Staring positions 1-24 will be determined during Saturday's "Pole Day," while the remaining 33-car field will be set on Sunday's "Bump Day." Several teams had requested that the IRL reduce its Indy 500 qualifying schedule from two weekends to one as a cost-cutting measure.

Teams have been practicing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week, in preparation for qualifying and the May 30 Indianapolis 500.

Qualifying for the 2010 Indy 500 will feature a revised format. The first day of qualifying will conclude with the nine fastest drivers competing for the pole in a 90-minute "shootout." A substantial increase in prize money will be rewarded to the pole winner, and additional cash will be handed out to the other two front-row qualifiers. Source

Iceland's ash may keep choking Europe's air

Iceland's clouds of volcanic ash are menacing European air traffic again, but transport chiefs insisted Tuesday they are learning from last month's crisis and won't let the hard-to-measure emissions ground their continent again.

Rising volcanic activity spurred aviation authorities in Ireland, northwest Scotland and the Faeroe Islands to shut down services Tuesday after a two-week hiatus. Their airports reopened several hours later, once the densest ash clouds had passed over their airports and back over the Atlantic.

How To train your dragon Movie Box office

"How to Train Your Dragon" proved a difficult film to slay at the North American box office as it took the top spot in its fifth weekend in theaters, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

The animated "Dragon" earned $15 million over the weekend since Friday, dropping just 23 percent since last weekend.

Romantic comedy "The Back-up Plan" followed at No. 2 with $12.3 million, while action comedy "The Losers" opened at No. 4, slightly short of expectations with $9.6 million.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to be No. 1 in the fifth week," said Anne Globe, head of worldwide marketing for DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc, the studio that produced "Dragon."

South Park characters threatened

A group called Revolution Muslim, which by most accounts seems less a terrorist cell than, metaphorically speaking, a couple of guys living in their parents' basements, managed to scare Comedy Central this week into censoring South Park for mocking their religion, or rather, the ban in some quarters of depictions of the prophet Muhammed.

The Anti-Defamation League, which has tracked the New York-based Revolution Muslim, says the group has no more than about a dozen members, is known mainly for spouting anti-Semitism, handing out pamphlets on the sidewalks of New York and picketing mosques that it thinks aren't radical enough. The founders are converts to Islam, including one who previously was Jewish and associated with a group called, no joke, Jews for Allah.
