US Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado faced the judgment of unhappy Democratic voters on Tuesday, not quite 90 days before November mid-term elections defined by a volatile anti-incumbent mood.

In Connecticut, meanwhile, Republicans seemed prepared to anoint millionaire professional wrestling executive and political novice Linda MacMahon their champion for the seat held by retiring veteran Democratic Senator Chris Dodd.

Voters in Georgia and Minnesota were also heading to the polls, poised to give observers and candidates nationwide more clues about how US public anger at the sour economy and Washington might affect the main contest, just months away.

Bennet, backed by President Barack Obama and the party's leaders in Washington, faced a tougher-than-expected challenge from former state legislator Andrew Romanoff, endorsed by former president Bill Clinton, and could be the latest Washington incumbent to fall.

Clinton, expected to criss-cross the country to stump for Democrats, has reportedly declared Romanoff, not Bennet, has "the best chance to hold this seat in November," when Republicans hope for big gains in the US Congress.

Last December, the IRL announced that Indy 500 qualifying will take place one week later than normally scheduled. Staring positions 1-24 will be determined during Saturday's "Pole Day," while the remaining 33-car field will be set on Sunday's "Bump Day." Several teams had requested that the IRL reduce its Indy 500 qualifying schedule from two weekends to one as a cost-cutting measure.

Teams have been practicing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week, in preparation for qualifying and the May 30 Indianapolis 500.

Qualifying for the 2010 Indy 500 will feature a revised format. The first day of qualifying will conclude with the nine fastest drivers competing for the pole in a 90-minute "shootout." The Anti-Defamation League, which has tracked the New York-based Revolution Muslim, says the group has no more than about a dozen members, is known mainly for spouting anti-Semitism, handing out pamphlets on the sidewalks of New York and picketing mosques that it thinks aren't radical enough. A tsunami was generated after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck at 2:17 p.m. Eastern time beneath the sea near the volcanic eruption in waters near Tonga. A tsunami alert for areas outside the immediate region was canceled six minutes after an initial bulletin was issued. Ugly election incidents show lingering U.S. racism. Two weeks before an election that could install the first black U.S. president, scattered ugly incidents have reflected a deep residue of racism among some segments of white America.

A cardboard likeness of Barack Obama was found strung from fishing wire at a university, the Democratic presidential nominee's face was depicted on mock food stamps, the body of a black bear was left at another university with Obama posters attached to it.

Though the incidents are sporadic and apparently isolated, they stirred up memories of the violent racial past of a country where segregation and lynchings only ended within the last 50 years.

And some feared that Obama could be a target for people who reject him on racial grounds alone. The Illinois senator leads Republican rival John McCain in polls ahead of the November 4 election and has a big following in many sections of Americans, from liberals to conservatives, black and white, poor and wealthy.

"Many whites feel they are losing their country right before their eyes," said Mark Potok, who directs the Southern Poverty Law Center that monitors hate groups. "What we are seeing at this moment is the beginning of a real backlash."

Man nabbed with frozen shrimp bags down his pants. Authorities said a man tried to steal several bags of frozen shrimp from a supermarket by hiding them down his pants. The Manatee County Sheriff's Office reported that an off-duty detective was shopping at a Sweetbay supermarket Sunday when he noticed what appeared to be a man with groceries stuffed in his pants.

The detective approached the 32-year-old man and ordered him to stop. Authorities said the man then removed several bags of shrimp from his pants and promised to put them back.

When the man fled for the store's exit, the detective tackled and restrained him until patrol deputies arrived.

The bigger the better!! lol! It took Brad Sciullo 4 hours and 39 minutes to finish a marathon. A meat marathon, that is. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound western Pennsylvania chef is the first person to eat a monstrosity called the Beer Barrel Belly Bruiser: a 15-pound burger with toppings and a bun that brought the total weight to 20.2 pounds.

The mountain of beef is the product of Denny's Beer Barrel Pub, about 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh in Clearfield.

Sciullo, 21, of Uniontown, said he was surprised he finished the sandwich Monday. "About three hours into it, things got tough," he said.

When asked what possessed him to eat a burger that big, Sciullo said: "I wanted to see if I could."

The burger included a bun, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, mild banana peppers and a cup each of mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and relish, pub owner Dennis Liegey said.

For completing the challenge in the under-five-hour time limit, Sciullo won $400, three T-shirts, a certificate "and a burger hangover, as I call it," Liegey said.

Is anyone else besides me still watching HBO's True Blood? (Slezak? Anybody?) I am hanging in there for now, mostly on the Alan Ball benefit of the doubt factor, and also because I'm still somewhat intrigued by the series' larger mythology — but most of these plotlines are losing my interest, fast. However! The most recent episode gave me another reason to keep tuning in: Mysterious vampire hunk Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) has awesome taste in indie rock.

See, I noticed that when Bill was driving Sookie (Anna Paquin) back from that vampire bar in Shreveport, he was playing a song by the very cool Cambodian-American band Dengue Fever on his car radio. Jittery Sookie was all, "Can we turn this down? What language are they speaking, anyhow?" (She should talk, with her odd would-be Louisiana accent; some NSFW phrasing in link.) Bill calmly informed her that the song was being sung in "Cambodian" — a language that's more commonly known as Khmer — but the point is, it wasn't some freaky vampire dialect, okay? Sookie reached over to turn off the tunes anyway and asked Bill to pull over. Then some cops showed up and everyone forgot all about that unusual-sounding music.

Disney's dog, to be exact, as the Burbank studio unspools its PG comedy "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" amid expectations that the live-action with talking dogs feature could fetch up to $30 million during its opening weekend. The film's canines are voiced by Drew Barrymore, Jamie Lee Curtis, Andy Garcia and George Lopez.

Family patrons form the target audience, but Disney executives hope the young-at-heart crowd also will come along for the four-legged romp.

"In all the screenings we've done, we have gotten nothing but wonderful marks from all the audiences who were on hand," Disney distribution president Chuck Viane said. "So there's no question that this is a commercial, family film, but I believe we can expand on that audience."

With "Chihuahua" sure to bow at No. 1, last weekend's top dog -- DreamWorks/Paramount's "Eagle Eye" -- could grab second place, if the Shia LaBeouf/Michelle Monaghan thriller rings up half its $29.2 million opening gross during its sophomore session.

Thieves steal five small planes

The group of around 20 men stormed the small airstrip at dawn, seized the officer's gun, tied him up, filled the planes with fuel and flew off, said Emma Quiroz, spokeswoman for the government's anti-organized crime operations in Sinaloa.

It was not clear if there was a link to drug gangs who use small aircraft to spirit cocaine through northern Mexico toward the United States. Quiroz's office said it was investigating whether any authorities had been complicit in the theft.

The office said in a statement that it was "taking the necessary actions to determine the whereabouts of these airplanes and the criminals who took part in the robbery."

The five planes were taken from a hangar at an unpaved airstrip belonging to a fumigation company in the town of Navolato. They had been taken out of service earlier this year by the army on the grounds they presented irregularities that violated civil aviation and airport laws.

The army, which is battling drug cartels up and down Mexico and especially in northern states with smuggling routes north, has confiscated 245 small planes and helicopters since November 2007, Mexican media reported.

Congressional leaders lobby for bailout bill

Bush said "a lot of people are watching" and he kept up his pleas from the White House as Democratic and Republican leaders worked over reluctant colleagues wherever they could find them. Bush argued that the measure represents the best chance to calm unnerved financial markets and ease a worsening credit crunch.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, the second-ranking House Democrat, said there was a "good prospect" of approval but he wouldn't put the measure up for the vote planned for Friday unless he was confident it would pass.

The chief Republican vote-counter, Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri, said, "I think we will be able to go to the floor and be successful sometime tomorrow."

GOP Rep. Zach Wamp of Tennessee announced he was switching his vote from "no" to "yes."

"If some of us don't change our vote, tomorrow's going to be a real ugly day in America, and I don't want to be a part of that," Wamp told Fox News Channel. He was one of the 133 House Republicans and 95 Democrats who dealt the measure a stunning defeat Monday, sending the stock market tumbling.

Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, another opponent on Monday, also planned to change his vote to a "yes" the second time around. "America feels differently today than it did on Friday about this bill, and he believes the House vote tomorrow will reflect that shift," said Danny Rotert, his spokesman.

Speaking to reporters during a meeting with business executives, Bush said the increasingly tight credit markets are not just hitting big banks in New York City, but in some instances threatening the existence of small businesses across the country. Women's Peripheral Artery Disease Tied to Secondhand Smoke.The researchers, who examined 1,209 Chinese women 60 years and older who'd never smoked, also found that exposure to secondhand smoke increased the risk of coronary heart disease by 69 percent and the risk of ischemic stroke by 56 percent. Ischemic stroke occurs when a blockage cuts off blood supply to the brain.

For the study, secondhand smoke exposure was defined as exposure to tobacco smoke for at least 15 minutes daily for more than one day every week for at least two years during the past 10 years.

Among the women in the study, 477 (39.5 percent) were exposed to secondhand smoke -- 414 (86.8 percent) at home and 63 (13.2 percent) in the workplace. Overall, there were 271 cases of PAD, 431 cases of coronary disease, and 172 cases of stroke, 109 of which were ischemic stroke.

The findings were published Sept. 22 in the journal Circulation.

"This study broadens the finding about the detrimental health effects of passive smoking on heart disease and stroke," senior author Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said in the news release.
